NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE & NHSI) are exploring the opportunity of applying seasonal profiling in elective care. Seasonal profiling is the process of pre-scheduling elective visits to low demand periods (can be seasons, months or days) to free up capacity during times of peak demand such as winter. The data collected for cancellation of elective operations by NHS England suggests that cancellations are on the rise, with the highest number recorded during winter months.
