Using evidence effectively for strategic commissioning: new videos and practical resources now available

How do we make better use of evidence when faced with complex decisions, competing priorities and limited time?

That question sits at the heart of a new series of Using Evidence Effectively for Strategic Commissioning videos that the Strategy Unit and DLN ICB Cluster have developed collaboratively. The series explores practical approaches to finding, interpreting and using evidence to support strategic decision making.

The six standalone videos are designed for busy commissioners and leaders who want to strengthen evidence-informed decision making without needing to be research specialists. Rather than focusing solely on research evidence, the series highlights the value of bringing together different forms of knowledge, including published evidence, data-driven intelligence, learning from practice, and perspectives from the people impacted by decisions.

The resources have been developed to complement the NHS England Strategic Commissioning Framework and the Strategic Commissioning Development Programme.

Together, the videos and resources provide practical guidance that can be applied to a wide range of strategic challenges, from pathway redesign and neighbourhood health initiatives to longer-term transformation programmes.

One of the recurring themes is that evidence rarely speaks for itself. Effective use of evidence requires thoughtful interpretation, discussion and application within real-world organisational contexts. This reflects the growing recognition that evidence-informed decision making depends not only on access to information but also on the capability, culture and processes that enable organisations to learn and act on what they know.
