Richard applies specialist skills in literature searching, evidence synthesis and qualitative and quantitative research methods in his role as a consultant. Taking a holistic approach to make sense of research and practice-derived evidence, Richard is committed to using these skills to better understand and address health inequities by providing actionable insights for decision makers.

Richard is an experienced evidence reviewer and qualitative researcher, with eight years of experience applying these skills in an NHS consultancy setting. He also manages the evaluation team Qualitative Research Community of Practice.
Recent projects at the Strategy Unit include:
- Narrative literature review on intersectionality and working with colleagues to use the insights from this to support study conceptualisation for a peer-reviewed publication (Spencer et al., 2025).
- Scoping/mapping review to inform the scope of a national population health needs assessment for the probation population in England.
- Designing and managing literature review activities within a successful invitation-to-tender response for a project examining the economic costs of discrimination
- Designed and led on production of an evidence map/ typology which supported the development of a national Plan to improve recording, published by NHS England.
