This Association of Professional Healthcare Analysts (AphA) accredited course, will help you understand what you can and cannot learn. You will learn how they are derived and (ab)used. You will learn how best to report mortality statistics and understand how to investigate a high/low hospital mortality statistic.

- Understand the context of hospital mortality statistics and explain their significance in healthcare quality assessment
- Understand the difference between crude and case mix or risk adjusted mortality rates
- Understand the rationale for case-mix adjustment
- Understand how hospital mortality statistics are derived and the use of different risk adjustment schemes
- Explain how a statistical measure in general is constructed and what it is measuring
- Understand the crucial difference between avoidable deaths and excess mortality
- Understand why excess mortality does not equate to avoidable deaths
- Understand how to report and investigate hospital mortality statistics
- Recognise that there are more effective approaches to measuring the quality of healthcare
